John MacArthur and Rob Bell

Rob Bell: a Brother to Embrace, or a Wolf to Avoid?
Tuesday, April 12, 2011

If Christopher Hitchens or Deepak Chopra penned a book that scoffed at the biblical teaching on hell, we would not be surprised. So why would anyone be shocked or confused when Rob Bell writes Love Wins? Has Bell shown any more commitment to gospel truth, or any more devotion to the principle of biblical authority than Hitchens or Chopra?

Is Rob Bell truly a Christian, or is he one of those dangerous deceivers Scripture warns us about repeatedly (Acts 20:29; 2 Corinthians 11:13-15; Colossians 2:8; 2 Peter 2:1; etc.)?
It's a fair—and necessary—question. Christ’s famous warning about wolves in sheep’s clothing is given to us as an imperative: “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:15-16). Our Lord clearly expects His true disciples to be able to spot spiritual imposters and wolves in sheep’s clothing—especially those who are purveyors of deadly false doctrines.

Rob Bell certainly fits that category. He relentlessly casts doubt on the authority and reliability of Scripture. He denies the Bible’s perspicuity, disavows its hard truths, and ridicules some of the most important features of the gospel.

Granted, Bell (who was raised in the evangelical movement and is an alumnus of Wheaton College) still insists on calling himself “evangelical.” He reiterated that claim recently in a March 14 interview with Lisa Miller, where he stated, “Do I think that I’m evangelical and orthodox to the bone? Yes.”

A careful examination of Bell’s teaching suggests, however, that his profession of faith is not credible. His claim that he is “evangelical and orthodox to the bone” is, to put it bluntly, a lie. Bell’s teaching gives no evidence of any real evangelical conviction. If “each tree is known by its own fruit” (Luke 6:44), we cannot blithely embrace Rob Bell as a “brother” just because he says he wants to be accepted as an evangelical.

If, as Jesus said, His sheep hear His voice and follow Him (John 10:27), then we ought to look with the utmost suspicion on anyone who doubts and denies as much of Jesus’ teaching as Rob Bell does, and yet claims to be a follower of Christ.

Scripture is crystal-clear about this: “If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, he is conceited and understands nothing” (1 Timothy 6:3-4).

Historic evangelicalism has always affirmed the authority, inerrancy, and sufficiency of Scripture, while declaring (as Jesus and the apostles did) that the only way of salvation for fallen humanity is through the atoning work of Christ, and the only instrument of justification is faith in Jesus Christ as He is revealed in the gospel.

Rob Bell believes none of those things. His skepticism about so many key biblical truths, his penchant for sowing doubt in his hearers, and his obvious contempt for the principles of divine justice as taught in Scripture all give evidence that he is precisely the kind of unbelieving false teacher Scripture warns us about.

Bell is an inveterate syncretist who loves to blend “progressive” and politically correct dogmas with eastern mysticism, humanistic jargon, and Christian terminology. His teaching is full of barren ideas borrowed directly from old liberalism, sometimes rephrased in postmodern jargon but still reeking of stale Socinianism.

What Bell is peddling is nothing like New Testament Christianity. It is a man-centered religion totally devoid of both clarity and biblical authority.

Given those facts, you might think any true evangelical would reject Bell and his teaching outright. But evidently many in the American evangelical movement think they are obliged simply to accept at face value Bell’s claim of orthodoxy. No less than Mart DeHaan, voice of Radio Bible Class, decried Bell’s critics, portraying them as the divisive ones for pointing out the unsoundness of Bell’s teaching. DeHaan wrote,
I’m left wondering… are we allowing love (and truth) to win now… by using threats of group pressure and blackballing of brothers like Rob, and those who openly or secretly stand with him? Is that really the best way to maintain a strong and healthy orthodoxy? [emphasis added]

The biblical answer to DeHaan’s question is clear and fairly simple: The best way to maintain a strong and healthy orthodoxy is to “[hold] fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching . . . to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers . . . who must be silenced” (Titus 1:9-11).

We have a duty not only to expose, refute, and silence Rob Bell’s errors, but also to urge people under his influence to run as fast and as far as they can from him, lest they be gathered into the eternal hell he denies. It won’t do to sit by idly while someone who denies the danger of hell mass-produces sons of hell (cf. Matthew 23:15).

In a series of posts this week, we will demonstrate from Rob Bell’s own published works that he has long been hostile to virtually every vital gospel truth; we will consider some of the questions he has raised about what the Bible has to say about hell; and we will compare and contrast what Bell is saying about hell with what Jesus said about it.

Buckle in and get ready to be challenged. These are admittedly some of the hardest truths in the New Testament, but there’s no reason anyone holding authentic evangelical convictions should find the subject confusing or controversial.

T4G 2010 - Together for the Gospel

T4G 2010: The Un-Adjusted Gospel

I was truly blessed last week to attend Together for the Gospel in Louisville, KY.  I, along with 7,000 other believers, were poured into by the Lord under the teaching of Mark Dever, RC Sproul, Al Mohler, Thabiti Anyabwile, John MacArthur, John Piper, Ligon Duncan, CJ Mahaney and Matt Chandler.  As you can see from the list above - all of these men come from many different backgrounds.  They hold different views regarding certain theological and philosophical matters ... items ranging from baptism to eschatology, but all agree and hold fast to the key element of Christianity ... The Gospel!  Although these men have varying backgrounds ... it was refreshing and eye-opening for me to see and experience so many men come together on the solid truth of the Gospel.

The event started off with Pastor Mark Dever asking a very simple, yet complex question - Is your church reflecting the gospel to the outside world?  It seems like an answer should be uttered almost instantly, but after pondering the depth of the question  it required more critical thought and evaluation.  He supported his question with 4 key sub-questions or characteristics that need to be evident within your church.
1) How is your church displaying the character and nature of God?
2) Is your church telling the truth about human beings? (The reality being that the church is filled with sinners)
3) Is your church reflecting the truth about The Savior, Jesus Christ?
4) Does your church have the right response to the gospel? (repentance and faith)
The sub-questions are key to answering "Is your church reflecting the gospel to the outside world?"  Key scriptures that Dever utilized are Ephesians 3:10-11, Leviticus 19:2, 2 Samuel 23:3-4, James 2 and Romans 6.  You can listen to the entire keynote "The Church is the Gospel Made Visible" by clicking here.

R.C. Sproul followed Dever via satellite.  Although Sproul was not physically at the venue, the power of his message resonated throughout the audience.  Sproul began his address by reading II Corinthians 6:11 regarding being unequally yoked and expounded on how this text has been utilized out of context for radical separation.  He then proceeded to address what he felt were the biggest concerns for the church.  Sproul stated his two concerns were: "The Danger of messing with Mr. In-Between" and "The Danger of messing with the gospel".  Mr. In-Between was an excellent overview of the Hegelian Dialectic Process - meaning that you begin with a thesis, that thesis is met with conflict or anti-thesis, the two collide and produce a new synthesis - aka The Third Way.  He emphasized that the church has lost its ability to give an antithesis ... a statement which I found to be very profound and telling about the church.  Messing with the Gospel entailed Sproul reinforcing imputation.  Sproul included a rebuke of those who reject the idea of justification by faith alone.  This point was underscored when he stated "We, as the church, must have imputation to have justification and without justification there is no gospel"Sproul concluded his address with a warning to us all - STOP TRYING TO IMPROVE THE GOSPEL! (emphasis mine) ... It's not our gospel, it's God's gospel and there is no way to humanly improve upon what God has already done.  To listen to the entire address "The Defense and Confirmation of the Gospel" by R.C. Sproul ... click here

Al Mohler was next to speak to the crowd of nearly 7,000.  Mohler gave a thoughtful address regarding the examination of the "CRASH" of the gospel ... the adjusted gospel.  His talk began by pointing out the assumption that the world has changed and that is why we have adjusted the gospel ... the gospel needed to keep up with the "intellectual era".  Mohler reinforced that this "adjusting" has been going on since the beginning of the church - referencing I Timothy 6:35, II Timothy 1:8-14 and Jude 3.  He then went on to explain eight trajectories that lead to an adjusted gospel.  These trajectories are as follows: 1. The Modern Trajectory, 2. The Post-Modern Trajectory, 3. A Moral Trajectory, 4. The Aesthetic Trajectory, 5. The Therapeutic Trajectory, 6. The Pragmatic Trajectory, 7. The Emotional Trajectory, and 8. The Materialist Trajectory.  You can listen to the entire presentation by Mohler if you click hereMohler concluded by giving the audience 2 key items to consider; Do not succumb to doctrine fatigue and embarrassment will be a result within our world if we are not rooted in truth ... 2 items of compromise that we should all prayerfully consider.

Thabiti Anyabwile reinforced what Mohler had covered with his address on "Wrongly Engaging the Culture".  He posed several questions to begin his presentation; At what level are we to address or attempt to change the culture? What does it even mean to engage the culture?  How do we know if the objective is met?  Thabiti answered all of those questions by biblical explaining what the role of the pastor should be within culture.  For his explanation he guided us through "The 4 P's of Paul" - Paul's Purpose, Philosophy, Practices, and Perspective ... referencing Colossians 1:24 through 3:4 throughout his address. Listen to Thabiti by clicking here.

John MacArthur stepped to the stage next to speak to the audience regarding the "Theology of Sleep".  Simply stated, "We sow the gospel and we go to sleep" ... MacArthur utilized Mark 4:26-29 to illustrate his point.  "It" grows and we do not know why ... "Its" growth has nothing to do with us!  He reinforced the sovereignty of God with the historical account of Nicodemus from John 3.  Its emphasis being that new life is beyond our power ... it is a divine miracle.  To drive the point home even further, MacArthur directed us to Luke 23:39-43.  The power of God on the soul of the thief on the cross offered no human explanation.  He then went on to detail the approach we must take regarding evangelism.  He stated that evangelism must consist of: 1) humility 2) obedience 3) diligence 4) confidence ... to listen to the entire presentation click here.

John Piper concluded our evening teaching/preaching on the topic "Did Jesus Preach Paul's Gospel" ... a response to the perspectives vocalized by N.T. Wright.  I will let Piper speak for himself - you can to by watching here.

Ligon Duncan reinforced the dominance that scripture must play in our lives with his presentation regarding the "Early Church Fathers".  The conclusion of the conference came with addresses from Matt Chandler and C.J. Mahaney.  To say the least, I was absolutely overwhelmed by the testimony of Matt Chandler.  I still cannot articulate my thoughts and feelings regarding what I heard from Matt, but it was a blessing and I promise you ... if you watch the video ... you to will be moved and blessed by his words.

I encourage all of you to check out all of the resources from T4G 2010.  Not only were the speakers great, but so was the worship time, and the fellowship that I had with some dear brothers in Christ.  I hope to see many more people there in 2012.  Until then .... continue to fight the good fight!

The Jesus You Can't Ignore

I, along with 3 other brothers in Christ, are about to begin an exploration within the book "The Jesus You Can't Ignore" - by John MacArthur. A quick glance at the table of contents shows us that this journey will indeed be challenging. The title(s) of the chapters consist of such headings as; "When it's wrong to be nice", "Two Passovers", "A Midnight Interview", " This Man Speaks Blasphemies", " Breaking the Sabbath", "Hard Preaching", "Unpardonable Sin", and "Woe". This journey will be exciting, challenging, and it is my hope that it will aide in my on-going transformation. With that said, I thought it would be a good introductory exercise to explore some of the words from Jesus - the words that we cannot afford to ignore . . . .
  • John 8:31-32: If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
  • John 14:23-24: If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to my Father who sent me.
  • John 8:42-44: If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
  • John 3:14-17: Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Oh wow . . . fasten your seatbelts . . . .what a journey this will be!
